As demand for high-bandwidth services in the metro increases, the access network often becomes a bottleneck. The Xtera 3300 OSM is a WDM service platform that solves this problem and offers:
- A low start-up cost
- Single or multiple add/drop wavelength capability, scalable from eight CWDM channels to 40 DWDM channels
- Universal interfaces that support client interfaces from 100 Mb/s to 10 Gb/s
- Multi-degree WDM Support for mesh network support, multi-spur link termination, or inter-ring connection
The 3300 OSM is a cost-efficient solution; starting with a single client interface and a single wavelength line drop, the 3300 OSM has a low initial cost that removes the financial barrier to entering new markets with wavelength services. The flexible add/drop capability also allows linear cost growth as additional services are provided. Shelf scales up to support 30 GigE add/drops per shelf.
Key benefits include:
- The 3300 OSM is a carrier class transport platform, with dual power supplies, dual Control/NMS cards and an array of high power intelligent fans. DC powered or AC powered shelves are available.
- It provides flexibility to deploy CWDM and DWDM wavelengths in the same shelf with full flexibility to start deploying up to 8 CWDM channels and migrate up to 40 DWDM.
- The 3300 OSM is supports multi-Degree WDM configurations; several CWDM or DWDM filters can feed multiple pairs of fibers in many directions, and even translate wavelengths between CWDM and DWDM if required
- The shelf provides 10 universal slots for optical interface cards. Any of these slots can be used for CWDM/DWDM filters or Transponders without slot restrictions, offering genuine any-card-any-slot capability. In Simplex operation (no redundant NCC card), the 11th slot can be used as an additional universal card slot.
- The shelf extension module is designed to support four (4) shelves, each shelf supporting 2x NCC cards, providing for an 8 degree WDM node with full OSC management in each of the WDM links originating on the node.
- It provides the optimal shelf presentation: a completely Front-Access shelf, having no connectors or power supplies in the back. Two shelves can be put back to back in a cabinet without any spacing between them
- It provides layer 0 and layer 1 Performance Monitoring, threshold crossing alerts, optical power level threshold alerts, temp sensor alerts for cards and SFP's, Intelligent fans, etc.
- The 2:1 , 4:1, and 9:1 sub-rate multiplexers, and the 4 port SFP multi-rate transponder (OFX) – Any-Rate (uncolored) transponder have integrated 1+1 protection without requiring any additional cards, reducing spare cards for more cost savings.
- It provides powerful Bridge and Roll functionality to facilitate maintenance; switching time between the working and the bridge connection occurs within micro seconds instead of the usual 50 ms switch time, significantly reducing the number of maintenance windows required to change traffic routing in the network, such as proactively routing around problem areas such as fiber right-of-ways next to road construction.
- If needed, it supports Xtera EDFA and Raman amplification products for these extra-long links using the 1455 OFA (Optical Fiber Amplifiers) shelf series allowing the 3300 OSM to be a low cost regional network solution.
- Through support of EXLR SFP optics with high dispersion tolerance, amplified links up to 220Km can be supported without any dispersion compensation required. In addition, with the EXLR SFP, optics distances up to 600 km are possible without the need for regeneration.

The 3300 OSM offers:
Transparent wavelength networking
The 3300 OSM provides intelligent and efficient transport for multiple layer 1 signals across the access and customer premises. The 3300 OSM is a bit-rate and protocol independent OADM (Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer) that is capable of data rates ranging from 100 Mb/s to 10 Gb/s.
Modular architecture – CWDM and DWDM
The 3300 OSM architecture scales from eight CWDM channels to 40 DWDM channels to ensure ample room for growth on a single platform. Service interface cards and plug-in optical interface modules can be hot inserted into the shelf to add capacity.
Multiple 3300 OSM shelves can be interconnected to provide a scalable configuration to support multi-degree configurations where each degree can be up to 41 DWDM channels.
Carrier grade architecture
The 3300 OSM architecture supports dual DC or AC power supplies, replaceable air filters, hot pluggable optical interface cards, hot-pluggable fan unit, and redundant hot-swappable network control cards. Universal card slots offer maximum configuration flexibility.
Flexible topology support
The 3300 OSM can be deployed in a ring topology as commonly found in many of today’s access fiber networks, but the 3300 OSM can also be deployed for a point-to-point applications. The 3300 OSM supports point-to-point configurations with diverse-path protection schemes to access a single building, or a linear network to string together access to multiple sites.
Common management
For network management, the 3300 OSM seamlessly integrates with the Xtera 7200 OSP (Optical Switching Platform) under the Xtera 8600 NMS (Network Management System) to provide an end-to-end managed metro network for wavelength services.
Additional features include:
- Small footprint—each 3300 OSM occupies 7 RU in a 19-inch (600 mm) rack
- Carrier-class functionality—features such as 99.999 percent availability/reliability via redundant power supplies, non-disruptive adds/changes, etc.
- Cost-effective fine granularity optics—SFP and XFP technology provide granularity of one wavelength to add/maintain/remove individual access/tributary ports and/or DWDM/CWDM wavelengths
- “Any wavelength, any protocol, any speed”—multi-dimensional support
- Support for multiple client interfaces—through bit-rate and protocol independence
- 100 Mb/s to 2.7G and 10G interface support—both on access/tributary side and network/line side
- Transparent access/client interfaces—any speed/any protocol over 850 nm, 1310 nm, 1550 nm
- Integrated WDM trunk interfaces—using the standard CWDM 20 nm grid, and DWDM using all C-band 100 GHz spacing
- Sub-rate multiplexing 2:1 (e.g. 2GEs on a 2.5G wavelength), 4:1, and 9:1 for aggregation of access/tributary signals over DWDM/CWDM wavelengths, with upcoming support for 9xGE on 10GE wavelength.
- Support for any topology—point-to-point, star, ring, and mesh
- 1+1 optical protection switching—50 ms or less
- Layer 1 client signal and optical trunk performance monitoring
- Fully managed by the Xtera 8600 NMS and Xtera 8300 EMS
The 3300 OSM enables the service provider to avoid the expense of back-to-back OADM configurations. The 3300 OSM supports WDM on-grid inter-operability with the 7200 OSP. This enables a seamless end-to-end wavelength networking solution, from access to core and back to access again. This also allows cost-effective CWDM to be used in the access, with DWDM used in the network core where higher capacity is required.
