XT
The Xtera XT is a DWDM optical link-extension platform offering modular scalability and deployment ease.

The XT provides a cost-effective optical link-extension platform with modular scalability, and DWDM and EDFA modules integrated into a compact 3 RU chassis. This optical link-extension platform can be easily deployed to provide a cost effective solution for a number of applications, including optical metro back-haul, fiber relief, or optical port extensions for SONET/SDH devices, Ethernet switches and other service platforms. Benefits include:
- Extending the distance between network service centers
- Aggregating edge services for efficient transport over multi-reach high-capacity optical networks
- Providing optical layer protection for advanced IP and mission critical data services
- Supporting diverse service offerings at the network edge
Service providers seeking to support low capacity services with a smooth evolution towards hundreds of gigabits will benefit from the modular scalability of the XT. It requires a low initial investment and allows incremental growth commensurate with service demand and revenues.
It is available in either a 3 rack unit or a single rack unit chassis. The latter is designed for low density configurations. The modular architecture of either chassis configuration provides network operators with the freedom to deploy the functionality they need, when they need it, resulting in significant network cost savings.
This section offers a deeper analysis of the benefits and deployment ease of the XT:
Optical Layer Support for Data Intensive Applications
With the XT providing WDM connectivity and regional optical amplification, service providers can introduce innovative methods of backing-up, storing and sharing data among geographically diverse metropolitan locations, allowing these industries to meet the requirements of Sarbanes Oxley or to ensure business continuity during planned and unplanned network interferences. The XT exploits the protocol and bit-rate independence of the optical layer to cost-effectively support a diverse range of service offerings at the network edge. Optical amplification is used to extend the distance between data centers allowing expensive regeneration elements to be eliminated and simultaneously increasing both the throughput and resilience of data networks.
Unrepeatered DWDM Application
New service offerings driven by growing broadband demands are not restricted to mainland locations. Previously under served offshore locations, such as resort getaways, offshore research facilities or even oil platforms can also benefit from the mix of bandwidth-intensive services that can be cost-effectively delivered by the XT in unrepeatered submarine applications.
Installation and Operation Made Easy
Ease of installation and operation was successfully engineered into the product, to extend the low cost benefits beyond initial cost to include low ongoing operational expenses. The XT can be installed and maintained without extensive and specialized training.
