Xtera’s Fiber Characterization Service is critical to verify the integrity of fiber prior to deployment through the measurement of key parameters, such as attenuation, reflectance, and dispersion. Fiber characterization is required to ensure that poor ORL, CD, and PMD results do not impair certain types of traffic, such as10G and DWDM. We perform a series of tests on your fiber optic spans to determine the integrity of the fiber, installation practices and performance.

Our standard test suite includes:

• Bi-directional Optical Insertion Loss (OIL) at 1550 nm and 1625 nm
• Bi-directional Optical Return Loss (ORL) at 1550 nm and 1625 nm
• Bi-directional Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) at 1550 nm and 1625 nm
• Chromatic Dispersion (CD) in the C and L bands
• Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) in the C band

Fiber Characterization Services are customized to fit exact customer needs and can usually be completed in a few days, depending on the complexity and size of the network. The results of the fiber characterization will be complied, analyzed and documented in a comprehensive report that will provide a complete picture of the optical network status.
