Lays foundation for continued leadership in 40G and beyond

Allen, Texas - Xtera’s high-performance NXT Submarine Line Terminal system has established a leadership position in the deployment of optical infrastructure for repeatered submarine links, greatly increasing capacity whilst retaining compatibility with existing terminal architecture. With the development and rapid deployment of its industry-leading 20G DPSK technology in some of the most demanding submarine applications worldwide, Xtera has reinforced its standing as a leader in optical submarine technology, and laid the technology foundation for continued leadership in 40G and beyond. 

 Until now, the state of the art for submarine links has been N x 10G, as current 40G terrestrial technology cannot be used for long submarine spans. Xtera’s innovative 20G DPSK technology not only carries two 10G streams on a single wavelength needing only a single-slot card, but also enables the deployment of 20G wavelength on the 50 GHz ITU-T grid – equivalent to 10G per 25 GHz – without needing narrow-band optical filters, or any changes to the rest of the terminal. This enables customers to significantly upgrade capacity on existing expensive submerged plant. For example, one customer has increased capacity by 16x, from the original 8 x 2.5G plant to 16 x 20G, with no change to their existing submerged infrastructure. This dramatic capacity on existing plant has resulted in rapid customer adoption – since the system shipped in early 2009, six systems have started or completed deployment, for five customers worldwide, including the fully operational Pacnet installation.

Whilst competing vendors are still only offering 10G capability, Xtera now has a fully field-proven 20G solution, providing a strong  base to extend its leadership to N x 40G and 100G.
